Breaking away from the standard beat-'em-ups and platformers populating the console's library, this software combined traditional video poker gambling with an eccentric, martial-arts fantasy narrative. The storyline follows a wandering mystical card master who must defeat a pantheon of mythical demons, corrupt warlords, and rogue sorcerers in high-stakes poker matches to reclaim stolen celestial artifacts. While it never saw an official Western release or mainstream critical acclaim, it remains a fascinating curiosity among retro collectors for merging casino mechanics with theatrical, anime-inspired boss encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard digital card games, Chao Ji Poker infuses every round of five-card draw with arcade-style combat attributes. Players manage a health meter and "Mana Qi" alongside their standard coin purse. Winning hands against opponents trigger flashy special moves, allowing the player's avatar to launch chi blasts, summon protective barriers, or unleash screen-clearing sword slashes that drain the opponent's life bar. As you progress through the campaign map, opponents deploy dirty tricks—such as peeking at your hand, forcing discard penalties, or altering the card deck mid-round. Between matches, players can visit a traveling merchant to purchase mystical talismans that boost certain hand payouts, such as increasing the multiplier for a Full House or granting immunity to specific magical curses.
