Description

DynoBlaze is an unreleased beat-’em-up game for the Sega Mega Drive by Bonsai Entertainment and Virgin Interactive Entertainment. It is notable for using Virgin’s “Digicel” technology, originally built for Disney’s Aladdin. The game was also referred to by some publications as Dinoblades.

DynoBlaze was cancelled for unknown reasons, but an extremely early prototype (dated January 1994) has since been dumped. Very little exists within this prototype, and the music is borrowed from RoboCop Versus The Terminator. A Sega Mega-CD version was also announced, but even less is known about that version.

The game re-emerged as DinoBlaze: What’s the Rumpus at CES 1995, this as a planned 3DO release, but it too was cancelled.

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the Sega Genesis in 1995 by an obscure independent developer, DynoBlaze is a hidden 16-bit action-platformer that pushes the Motorola 68000 processor to its limits. The storyline plunges players into a post-apocalyptic, prehistoric dystopia where cybernetically enhanced dinosaurs have enslaved the remnants of humanity. You control Pyron, a rogue mutant velociraptor infused with volatile plasma energy, tasked with infiltrating the monolithic obsidian stronghold of the Tyrant Rex and dismantling the global extinction matrix. While it missed mainstream marketing waves upon its original cartridge launch, it has since achieved cult status among retro collectors for its chunky pixel art, atmospheric FM-synthesized soundtrack, and relentless difficulty spike.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

DynoBlaze combines traditional run-and-gun mechanics with visceral melee combat across six diverse, vertically scrolling stages, ranging from toxic swampland refineries to crumbling volcanic citadels. Unlike typical Genesis platformers, Pyron features a momentum-based physics engine; building speed allows for massive leaps and devastating sliding drop-kicks. Combat revolves around a dual-attack system: close-range claw slashes that build up your "Blaze Meter," and long-range plasma fireballs unleashed from Pyron's mutated spine. Filling the Blaze Meter unlocks temporary screen-clearing invincibility in the form of a primal berserk state. Hidden amber artifacts scattered throughout each level unlock devastating secondary abilities, such as thermal tail-whips and seismic ground stomps, adding necessary depth to boss encounters.
