Description

Chess is an unlicensed game for the Sega Mega Drive that was most likely released in 1998. Very little information is known about it, although its ROM is available on the internet, and it is one of the included built-in games on the 80-in-1 model of AtGames’ Sega Mega Drive Arcade Ultimate portable system. It is unknown whether it has any relation to the unreleased Sega Channel game Chessmaster. The gameplay is just an average Chess video game, though the board is 3D. The chess board can be customized.

Overview & History

Released by Sage's Creation in 1992 during the height of the 16-bit console wars, *Chess* for the Sega Genesis brought the world's most enduring tabletop strategy game into the digital living room. While traditional console cartridges of the era focused on fast-paced platformers and arcade action, this title offered a cerebral alternative powered by a surprisingly robust artificial intelligence engine developed by Hegener & Glaser. Rather than following a conventional narrative or storyline, the game focuses entirely on the eternal tactical warfare between the White and Black armies, simulating the grand tournaments of Europe within the Genesis's proprietary hardware limitations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players engage in grid-based tactical warfare across a classic 8x8 chessboard, aiming to trap the opponent's King in a state of inescapable checkmate. The game features multiple difficulty settings, adjustable AI thinking times, a puzzle mode, and a two-player head-to-head option. Every iconic piece retains its authentic movement and capture mechanics: Pawns advance forward and capture diagonally; Knights leap in unique L-shaped trajectories; Bishops glide unobstructed along diagonals; Rooks command open files orthogonally; Queens combine the devastating power of both Rooks and Bishops; and the vulnerable King moves one square in any direction. Special mechanics such as castling, pawn promotion, and en-passant captures are fully implemented, demanding precise positional play and deep strategic foresight.
