Commandos

Overview & History

Released exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 1992 by SunnSoft, Commandos is an obscure, highly challenging run-and-gun military action game. While often confused with Pyro Studios' much later tactical strategy masterpiece of the same name, this 16-bit title draws heavy inspiration from arcade classics like Ikari Warriors and Commando. Set in deep jungle warzones against a technologically superior rebel regime, the storyline casts players as elite special forces operatives sent behind enemy lines to rescue hostages, dismantle heavily fortified armaments, and ultimately neutralize the corrupt dictator occupying the region. Its gritty pixel art and relentless difficulty curve cemented its cult status among retro Sega collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around fast-paced, top-down directional shooting across sprawling, vertically scrolling terrain. Players navigate treacherous environments filled with landmines, entrenched machine-gun nests, and relentless waves of hostile infantry. Character moves include an agile combat roll to evade incoming crossfire, directional firing arcs that allow for diagonal shooting, and the ability to pilot abandoned enemy tanks and gunboats scattered throughout the stages. Power-ups such as spread-shot ammunition, armor plating, and timed cluster bombs are crucial for survival against punishing end-level bosses. Ammunition management is a constant tension, forcing players to balance aggressive offense with strategic cover usage.
