Description

The game stars the green-haired Joe and the blue-haired Mac, cavemen who battle though numerous prehistoric levels using, weapons such as boomerangs, bones, fire, flints, electricity, stone wheels, and clubs. The objective of the game is simply rescuing a group of girls who were kidnapped by a rival tribe of cavemen. The gameplay is somewhat similar to Contra and has a Gauntlet-style health system, where the player loses health over a period of time apart from in boss battles. This health system is also not unlike that of Sega’s Wonder Boy. The game could be played in either single player or two player mode. In the two player mode, both characters could hurt each other. The game was also notable for its cartoony graphics, humor, and sound effects.

The original arcade version had the distinction of allowing the player to select between different routes (much like Taito’s Darius) at the end of a boss battle. Also, after defeating the final boss, the players can choose between three exits, each one leading to a slightly different ending sequence.

Joe & Mac

Overview & History

Originally a vibrant arcade coin-op by Data East, *Joe & Mac* (subtitled *Caveman Ninja* in international markets) leaped onto the Sega Genesis in 1993, courtesy of Takara. While Genesis ports of arcade hits often faced compromises, this 16-bit iteration carved out its own identity with unique level designs and a punchy visual palette. The storyline whisks players back to a whimsical, neon-hued prehistoric era where the titular green-haired hero Joe and blue-haired hero Mac must rescue the village women from a rival tribe of Neanderthals and ferocious prehistoric beasts. Across diverse stages ranging from dense tropical jungles to active volcanoes, the dynamic duo fights their way through pterodactyls, T-Rexes, and cavemen bosses using primitive yet surprisingly lethal weaponry.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat 'em ups, *Joe & Mac* operates primarily as a frantic platformer with heavy projectile combat. The Genesis version supports both single-player action and an energetic two-player cooperative mode. Joe and Mac are far from defenseless; they wield upgradeable weapons like stone axes, bone boomerangs, fireballs, and electricity-infused wheels. A defining mechanic is the "charge attack"—holding down the attack button causes the cavemen to spin fiercely like a prehistoric top, unleashing a devastating dash that clears out waves of enemies or breaks through tough boss defenses. Players must also manage a health meter represented by a timer-like life bar that constantly drains, forcing aggressive momentum and rewarding players for collecting nutritious food items like giant steaks, fruit, and caveman fast food scattered throughout the environments.
