Description

An arena shooter for up to 2 players that takes inspiration from the likes of Smash TV, Contra, Mercs, Granada, Alien Syndrome, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Chaos Engine, and Shock Troopers.

The game look, feel and sound like the classic Mega Drive games of the ’80s and ’90s, but it adds some new elements that weren’t so common in games of that era, particularly procedural map generation and randomisation of gameplay elements. Graphically designed by the legendary pixel artist Henk Nieborg, who previously worked on the Mega Drive title “The Misadventures Of Flink”, developed by Psygnosis. To complete the 90’s comeback, the OST has been created by “Savaged Regime”; a highly renowned chip-tune artist that knows how to push the Mega Drive’s YM2612 chip to the limit.

XenoCrisis

Overview & History

Developed by Bitmap Bureau and originally funded via a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, *Xeno Crisis* is an uncompromising, modern 16-bit arcade-style run-and-gun arena shooter explicitly coded for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Drawing heavy inspiration from classic 90s coin-op masterpieces like *Smash TV* and *Aliens*, the game places players in the boots of battle-hardened elite Marines navigating a desolate, overrun research facility. After losing contact with Outpost 88, your mission is to infiltrate the subterranean complex, rescue surviving scientists, neutralize the alien infestation, and uncover the sinister origins of the outbreak before activating the facility's self-destruct mechanism. Released physically on cartridge to critical acclaim, this title pushed the limits of Sega's aging hardware with its frantic pacing, stunning pixel art, and authentic YM2612 chiptune soundtrack composed by Savant.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike linear side-scrolling shooters, *Xeno Crisis* utilizes fixed, multi-directional arena combat across ten randomized levels where positioning and ammo conservation are vital to survival. Players can choose between two distinct protagonists—Marines "Reg" and "Mei"—who can scavenge weapon upgrades like the shotgun, grenade launcher, and flame thrower, alongside restorative health items and temporary shields. Movement mechanics are exceptionally fluid, featuring a vital dodge-roll that grants brief invulnerability frames to evade relentless waves of biomechanical monstrosities. The game also introduces a unique score and progression system allowing players to purchase permanent stat upgrades and equipment between zones, adding a layer of strategic depth to the sheer arcade chaos. Cooperative two-player simultaneous play is fully supported, turning the frantic firefights into a chaotic masterclass of tactical teamwork.
