Description

Uh-oh, the occultic ritual-performing locals have taken things out of control, and they’ve caused a timeloop of never-ending days of ritual! Take your two hillbilly heroes in their homemade flippercopter and try your best to repel the demonic waves of evil! Your ship is commanded by two players, one flies, the other shoots. You must work together to blast those hellish critters back to kingdom come, and confront the giant guardian hellbeast leading the charge. You keep going until your player dies (you can survive one shot for five seconds and return to normal, but if you’re shot again during this period, you both die!)

Fatal Smarties

Overview & History

Released deep into the 16-bit era by an eccentric, unlicensed developer in 1995, Fatal Smarties is a bizarre cult classic for the Sega Genesis that merges the sugar-coated aesthetics of confectionery mascots with the brutal, blood-pumping combat of arcade fighting games. The storyline revolves around the Sugar-Coated Syndicate, a rogue faction of sentient, highly aggressive candy pellets who have kidnapped the Royal Chocolate Master. You must fight your way through the sticky depths of the Confectionery Caves and the Minty Mountains to restore sweet order. While never officially endorsed by Nestlé or any major candy conglomerate, this infamous cartridge gained underground notoriety at flea markets for its surprisingly deep lore and aggressive, heavy-metal chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Fatal Smarties plays as a fast-paced, side-scrolling brawler mixed with one-on-one tournament fighter mechanics. Players choose from a roster of six uniquely mutated candy characters, such as "Red Rumble," a fiercely aggressive peanut-filled sphere, and "Sour Susan," a jawbreaker capable of freezing opponents with acidic spit. Each fighter features a distinct meter called the "Sugar Rush Gauge," which fills up as you deal or take damage. Once full, players can execute devastating screen-clearing "Sugar Overdose" special moves. The game boasts destructible candy-block environments, allowing players to chip away at platforms to create new pathways or hurl jawbreaker projectiles at incoming hordes of gummy grunts.
