Overview & History

Originally developed by DICE in 1994 under the working title Hardcore and slated for release by Psygnosis on the Sega Genesis, this ambitious run-and-gun platformer was astonishingly canceled when the 16-bit era was practically finished, despite being 99% complete. Decades later, Strictly Limited Games unearthed the pristine master ROM, finishing and releasing it for retro hardware in 2020. The storyline plunges players into a dystopian sci-fi future where a ruthless mechanized alien army has invaded a sprawling orbital fortress. As the cybernetic soldier Arthur, your mission is to infiltrate the collapsing complex, navigate deadly labyrinthine corridors, and override the central mainframe before the station crashes into Earth.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ultracore is a masterclass in 16-bit action, blending frantic shoot-em-up mechanics with intricate, vertically and horizontally expansive level design. Unlike linear shooters, players must hunt for security cards, deactivate force fields, and rescue surviving crew members. Arthur is equipped with a versatile arsenal, starting with a standard plasma blaster and upgrading to devastating weaponry like spread shots, homing missiles, and heavy lasers. Environmental hazards such as crushing pistons, acid pools, and automated turret defenses demand precise platforming. The game's distinct aesthetic is driven by gritty, highly detailed pixel art and an incredible, high-energy synth-rock soundtrack composed by legendary chip-tune artists, capturing the quintessential mid-90s cyberpunk atmosphere.
