Coffee Crisis is a neo-rogue brawler that puts you in the shoes of the only baristas on Earth with enough heavy metal in their veins to fend off an alien assault. Play solo or join up with a friend to fight across eight unique locations ranging from your Coffee House HQ to the far reaches of outer space. Go up against an army of wild alien enemies, and the humans they have brainwashed with a variety of weapons, special moves, suplexes, and coffee!

The Smurglian race has come to Earth and they’re not leaving until they steal our three most prized commodities: heavy metal, free Wifi, and our coffee. Crunch through fistfuls of alien meat as you stop their invasion, and enjoy random modifiers to the enemies and action on each playthrough. It’s a totally unique cup of beat ’em up action every time you play!

Developed by Mega Cat Studios and originally released as a physical cartridge for the Sega Genesis in 2017, Coffee Crisis is a heavy-metal-infused beat 'em up heavily inspired by arcade classics like Streets of Rage. The storyline takes a delightfully absurd sci-fi turn: alien invaders known as the Smurglians descend upon Earth with one nefarious goal—to steal humanity's ultimate source of fuel and culture: heavy metal music and artisanal coffee. Players step into the combat boots of Nick and Ashley, two heavy-metal baristas equipped with an arsenal of death metal riffs and high-caffeine beverages. The game stands out as a genuine retro passion project, utilizing authentic Sega Genesis hardware limitations to deliver a blistering 16-bit aesthetic combined with a crushing chiptune metal soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay follows traditional side-scrolling beat 'em up conventions, but introduces unique mechanical twists via the "Modifier Matrix." As players brawl through alien-infested coffee shops, heavy metal concert venues, and futuristic streets, picking up various coffee drinks grants temporary stat boosts and bizarre environmental conditions. Controls are tight and responsive: players can execute standard three-hit punch combos, devastating aerial drop-kicks, and grappling throws. When surrounded by waves of Smurglian foes, unleashing a special move drains a portion of health in exchange for clearing the screen with a shockwave of pure guitar feedback. Special items scattered throughout the stages can be juggled, and weapon pickups like spiked baseball bats and electric guitars drastically alter combat range and damage output.
