Description

An early prototype of the unreleased Sega Mega Drive adaptation of Akira.

Developed by Black Pearl Software sometime in late 1993 for a planned released in 1995, this game attempted to do a faithful adaptation of the original film by presenting various key scenes from the film in unique ways. The game features first person shooting, racing, platforming, and beat-em up segments to help illustrate the various points in the movie’s story. Thought to have been lost since its initial debut in various media as well as the Summer Consumer Electronic Show (SCES 94) in 1994, an early prototype has been discovered and is presented for the first time in full.

Akira

Overview & History

Developed and published by Black Pearl Software, with distribution handled by THQ in 1994, Akira for the Sega Genesis is a notorious adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's cyberpunk masterpiece. Unlike the Japanese-exclusive Famicom visual novel, this North American release attempted to translate the sprawling, apocalyptic epic into a side-scrolling action game. Players step into the shoes of Kaneda, the rebellious leader of the Capsule motorcycle gang, navigating the neon-lit, crumbling streets of Neo-Tokyo. The game's development cycle was famously troubled, leading to its cancellation in Japan and its eventual, abrupt appearance in Western markets. Despite capturing the gritty industrial aesthetic and featuring digitized sound bites from the anime film, the title gained a polarizing reputation due to its unforgiving difficulty spikes, erratic collision detection, and unorthodox gameplay pacing that mixed platforming with vehicular action sequences.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between traditional 2D beat-em-up platforming and high-speed motorcycle segments. As Kaneda, players must brawl against rival Clown gang members and heavily armored military forces using a combination of punches, kicks, and a signature laser pistol. Ammunition for ranged attacks is severely limited, forcing players to rely heavily on close-quarters combat and environmental awareness. Unlike typical arcade brawlers, Kaneda's movement feels heavy and deliberate, requiring precise timing to execute jump-kicks and evade incoming gunfire. Health pickups are scarce, and enemies respawn aggressively, turning standard progression into a grueling trial-and-error endurance test. Between stages, players jump onto Kaneda's iconic futuristic red motorcycle for pseudo-3D scaling sequences, dodging barricades and blasting pursuing vehicles in a frantic race against the clock. The ultimate goal is to unravel the conspiracy behind the psychic entity known as Akira before Tetsuo's god-like power consumes the entire city.
