Description

Your role as Rick Dangerous demands that you stop the Fat Guy and his evil plans to help an alien race take over control of our world. The journey takes in Hyde Park, Ice Caverns, Forest and Atomic Mines. He must solve positional puzzles and memorize the locations of laser bolts and booby traps, as well as avoiding enemies including robots, penguins and nomads. As in the first game, a fifth level is unlocked after you complete the four standard levels.

Rick can climb ladders and crawl through tight spaces. He is equipped with a laser gun and six little bombs, but can also punch with some effect. The controls are very easy to understand: pressing fire+up shoots the gun, pressing fire+down places a bomb, pressing fire+bottom-left/bottom-right makes Rick slide a bomb along the floor in the specified direction.

Rick Dangerous 2

Overview & History

Released initially by Core Design in 1990 for European microcomputers, the sequel to the cult-classic platformer eventually found its way into the retro enthusiast sphere through homebrew and conversion projects inspired by the Sega Genesis era. In Rick Dangerous 2, our fedora-wearing, whip-cracking hero trades the ancient Egyptian tombs and Aztec temples of the first game for a delightfully campy 1950s sci-fi B-movie universe. The storyline kicks off when diminutive, green-skinned aliens invade London, kidnapping the Prime Minister and setting their sights on total world domination. Rick, ever the intrepid British secret agent, naturally takes it upon himself to single-handedly dismantle the extraterrestrial armada across multi-tiered levels spanning futuristic cities, alien motherships, and frozen wastelands. Infamous for its trial-and-error design philosophy, the game requires players to memorize trap layouts through repeated failure, turning every screen into a deadly puzzle of hidden spikes, descending crushers, and laser-firing droids.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor which heavily featured firearms, Rick begins this sequel entirely weaponless, armed only with a trusty stick and a supply of dynamite. Players must navigate labyrinthine single-screen flip-screens and scrolling stages while collecting glowing bonus icons and defusing detonators. Rick's core movement set includes walking, ducking, high-jumping, and scaling vertical ladders. His offensive options are distinct: he can poke enemies with his stick at close range or lay a stick of dynamite that detonates after a short fuse, which is vital for clearing blocked pathways and annihilating bosses. Enemy placement is notoriously punishing, forcing players to anticipate hidden ambushes from ceiling-drop creatures and flying saucers. The game's vibrant, colorful pixel art captures the Saturday-morning cartoon aesthetic brilliantly, accompanied by snappy chiptune sound effects that punctuate every explosive demise and successful jump.
