Description

Gensou Senki Kokou no Ryuu: Crying Dragon is an unreleased action RPG originally announced by Sega as part of a line-up of early Sega Mega-CD games given to Famitsu and listed in the 28 June 1991 issue, on page 14. It was cancelled for unknown reasons.

On November 20th, 2019, a very early prototype of the game was acquired by Andlabs and subsequently dumped. As a sign that the prototype is from very early in development, it is a Sega Mega Drive on a standard Sega development cartridge.

The game itself is a side-scrolling action RPG. When you start the game, you’ll be thrown into a town. You can move around and press Up to enter a building. Each building has a primitive looking shop which after a brief period of time unceremoniously presents a menu where you can do shop-type things with.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan during the twilight era of the Sega Genesis, Gensou Senki Kokou no Ryuu: Crying Dragon stands as a fascinating and deeply atmospheric action-RPG developed by Kogado Studio. Unlike standard platformers, this title blends overhead exploration with tactical, real-time combat, immersing players in a dark, mythological world. The storyline follows a lone, melancholic dragon warrior named Zephyr, whose soul is bound to a cursed lineage, tasked with halting the resurrection of the ancient Chaos Titan before the lunar eclipse. Despite receiving critical acclaim for its haunting chiptune soundtrack composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and rich sprite art, the game suffered from poor distribution and was never officially localized for Western audiences, making original physical cartridges a coveted holy grail for retro collectors today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Crying Dragon distinguishes itself through a stamina-based magic system and dynamic combat maneuvers. Players navigate labyrinthine dungeons and sprawling overworlds from a top-down perspective, seamlessly transitioning into intense skirmishes. Zephyr’s primary moveset includes a swift sword combo, a sweeping tail attack for crowd control, and the ability to morph mid-combat into a localized draconic state to unleash elemental breath attacks. Experience points earned from defeating monsters directly feed into a branching dragon-scale skill tree, allowing players to customize elemental affinities such as frost, lightning, and fire. The game is particularly notorious for its unforgiving difficulty spikes, demanding precise positioning, mastery of the invulnerability dash frame, and careful management of the 'Dragon Tear' meter, which depletes if Zephyr stays in his transformed state too long.
