Description

Originally developed for the SNES by LucasArts in 1992, Super Star Wars was the very first Star Wars title to grace the SNES platform. It was a faithful retelling of “A New Hope”. The game was released in late 1992, but plans for ports of the game had begun. Both a Sega CD and a PC port were teased sometime in 1993-1994, but both would eventually be canceled by LucasArts themselves.

In Europe, a Sega Mega Drive port of Super Star Wars was teased and even shown in various magazines throughout 1993. The port was being done by Sega Interactive, formally known as Interactive Designs. A more ambitious version the Sega CD was also planned which would’ve included CD quality audio and FMV sequences. Aside from a few scarce screenshots of the first level and oddly some shots from a developer’s workstation, this is all the information that would be gathered on the project. The game was soon canceled for unknown reasons along with the rest of the planned ports of the game.

Overview & History

Released by JVC and Victor Musical Industries in 1992, the Sega Genesis port of Star Wars adapts LucasArts' earlier NES title into a 16-bit action-platformer. Diverting slightly from the pure arcade-shooter formula of Namco's 1987 arcade cabinet, this Genesis iteration thrusts players directly into the boots of Luke Skywalker as he reenacts the pivotal events of A New Hope. Guiding the young farmboy-turned-Jedi through treacherous environments like the sand-dune wastes of Tatooine, the trash-strewn corridors of the Death Star, and ultimately the nail-biting, pseudo-3D trenches of the Death Star surface run, the game captures the cinematic space opera's grand scale through ambitious sprite scaling and distinct musical arrangements powered by the Genesis's YM2612 sound chip.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, this adaptation blends traditional platforming with vehicular action sequences and isometric exploration. Luke begins his journey wielding a basic blaster, cautiously navigating cavernous landscapes populated by Jawas, Sandtroopers, and deadly environmental hazards before finally constructing and wielding his iconic lightsaber. Defeating enemies charges a Force meter, allowing Luke to unleash powerful ranged energy blasts and execute high-flying acrobatic maneuvers. Mid-game highlights include piloting a landspeeder across the dunes and navigating the perilous tractor-beam generator control rooms. The climax shifts dramatically into a cockpit perspective, requiring precision steering and shield management to successfully fire proton torpedos into the exhaust port while dodging incoming TIE fighters.
