Description

In the 13th century, the Catholic Church used it’s soldiers to expel the members of the religious order of the Cathars from the Languedoc region of France. You, as Jean Raymond, have run from these soldiers and hidden in a Abbey. But it turns out the Abbey was built over catacombs of evil. Collect the twelve Cathar crosses to expel the evil from this building.

l’Abbaye des Morts (Abbey of the Dead) is a game designed to look and control like a ZX Spectrum game. It’s gameplay is inspired by games like Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy. You must move through room after room to find and gather the twelve crosses. Red hearts will grant you extra lives and stone pillars with a cross near the top act as checkpoints. Ring bells or move switches to open further passages. Avoid anything that is moving as it’s touch will lose you a life. Lose all your lives and the game is over.

Originally developed in 2010 by Locomalito as an indie PC homage to 8-bit home computer classics, *L'Abbaye des Morts* found a thrilling second life on the Sega Genesis thanks to a dedicated console port by MoonWatcher and Sanul. Set in 13th-century France, the storyline follows Jean Raymond, a Cathar preacher fleeing from the ruthless crusade of the Catholic Church. Seeking refuge, Jean stumbles upon an ancient, accursed abbey built atop a forgotten evil. This Genesis conversion brilliantly captures the dark, atmospheric pixel art of the original while tailoring the brutal, single-screen room navigation and puzzle-platforming specifically to Motorola 68000 hardware, complete with a haunting chiptune soundtrack that elevates the sense of impending doom.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around exploring over 80 claustrophobic, interconnected single-screen chambers within the ruined monastery. Players must guide Jean Raymond through deadly traps, crumbling floors, spitting gargoyles, and demonic entities while collecting three holy keys required to unlock the final sanctum. Unlike action-heavy platformers, *L'Abbaye des Morts* emphasizes puzzle-solving, spatial memory, and precise timing. Jean possesses no offensive attacks or weapons; his only defense is pure agility, meaning players must meticulously learn enemy patrol patterns and environmental hazards to survive the labyrinthine depths of the cursed abbey.
