Deflektor MD

Overview & History

Originally developed by Vektor Grafix and published by Gremlin Graphics as *Deflektor* on 8-bit home computers in 1987, the cult-classic laser puzzle formula finally made its way toward a targeted 16-bit console conversion. While the Sega Genesis port, titled *Deflektor MD* (Mega Drive), was fully coded and completed in the early 1990s, it unfortunately languished in publisher limbo and was never officially released during the console's commercial heyday. Decades later, retro enthusiasts and preservationists recovered the unreleased ROM, allowing modern gamers to experience this lost gem. The game lacks a traditional narrative storyline, instead casting the player as an elite cybernetic technician tasked with systematically routing, reflecting, and absorbing lethal photon beams through a series of hazardous, electrically charged grid labyrinths.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Deflektor MD challenges players to direct a continuously firing laser beam from a fixed emitter into a designated receiver within a strict time limit. You control a floating, directional mirror node that can be rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise, and moved across grid-based coordinates to intercept the beam. The core puzzle mechanics revolve around laser physics: beams bounce off mirrored surfaces at precise angles, but hitting the unmirrored backs of reflectors, unshielded walls, or delicate circuit components will destabilize the system, resulting in an explosive failure and the loss of a life. To complicate matters, stages feature dynamic obstacles including movable blocks, absorbing black holes, rotating barriers, and bombs that must be detonated by carefully guiding the beam into them. Success requires meticulous spatial reasoning, rapid reflexes, and absolute precision under the pressure of a ticking clock.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the mirror selector across the grid
  • Action Keys: Rotate mirror clockwise / counter-clockwise and pick up movable objects
  • Enter: Start / Pause and confirm menu selections
