Overview & History

Developed by Game Atelier and published by Micronet, Custodian is a lesser-known, highly ambitious sci-fi action platformer originally slated for the Sega Genesis during the 16-bit era's twilight. The storyline drops players into a grim, dystopian future aboard the massive interstellar prison vessel named Tartarus. Following a catastrophic containment breach, the ship's automated security systems go rogue, and bio-engineered inmates overrun the decks. You control the Custodian, a heavily armed cyborg warden tasked with navigating the decaying labyrinthine corridors of the ship, neutralizing mutant hordes, and overriding the central artificial intelligence before the vessel impacts Earth.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun titles of its era, Custodian blends fast-paced platforming with strategic resource management. Players must rescue surviving human technicians scattered across five sprawling, biomechanical stages while avoiding environmental hazards like toxic coolant leaks and high-voltage Tesla grids. The Custodian possesses a versatile combat repertoire: a rapid-fire plasma blinder for ranged threats, a heavy-duty energy blade for close-quarters melee combat, and a temporary jetpack boost that allows for vertical exploration across multi-tiered screens. Upgrades hidden within armory lockers grant temporary invulnerability shields and cluster-bomb grenades, adding tactical depth to boss encounters against corrupted mainframe guardians.
