Description

Devwill Too is a 2D platformer. It is the follow-up to the original Devwill, but not really a sequel.

The player controls a small, red fantasy creature called Homunculus. Levels consist of several single screen environment strung together horizontally using the flip screen mechanic. There are several precise platform mechanics such as getting past gaps, spikes and leaving crumbling surfaces in time. Next to general movement the character can jump, a move also used to take out enemies. This can also be done by sliding into them. Quickly taking out enemies in succession is encouraged through a combo mechanic of up to nine hits. This is rewarded with points and an additional life is provided for every 400 points.

The game consists of eighteen stages, including two hidden ones. Levels are not entirely linear, with multiple vertical routes and backtracking by returning to the left side of the screen. There are thirteen animated sequences and five bosses to defeat. The game keeps track of the highscore and there is a Jukebox option in the main menu to listen to the game’s soundtrack with fifteen tracks.

Devwill Too

Overview & History

Originally developed by indie developer Sauraen and officially published by Mega Cat Studios in 2021, Devwill Too is a remarkable homebrew release that brought a modern, precision-platforming metroidvania aesthetic to the 16-bit Sega Genesis / Mega Drive hardware. Pushing the limits of the Motorola 68000 processor, the game serves as a masterclass in grassroots console development, blending intricate pixel art, atmospheric chiptune music, and punishingly tight platforming physics. The storyline follows a courageous, sword-wielding protagonist navigating a sprawling, labyrinthine castle filled with shifting gravity, environmental hazards, and ancient mechanical terrors. Rather than a traditional linear adventure, Devwill Too requires players to retrace their steps, uncover hidden pathways, and conquer screen after screen of single-room screen-flip challenges reminiscent of classic MSX and arcade platformers, all while maintaining the snappy performance expected of peak Sega Genesis software.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay of Devwill Too revolves around uncompromising precision, momentum management, and versatile movement abilities. Unlike standard run-and-gun platformers, the protagonist relies on a close-range sword slash for dispatching subterranean beasts and a dynamic wall-jump mechanic that allows for sweeping vertical ascents through treacherous shafts. Players must master inertia while dodging floating projectiles, timing jumps across collapsing platforms, and navigating portals that flip the screen's gravity. Exploration is non-linear; scattered throughout the castle are essential upgrades that grant new traversal powers, opening access to previously unreachable zones. The difficulty is high, demanding absolute mastery over the character's hitboxes and jump arcs, but instant room respawns keep the pacing brisk and prevent frustrating progression halts.
