It features a whodunnit mystery where a private investigator is called to a girls’ school to investigate the disappearance of one of its pupils. She vanished shortly after playing a game of mahjong with three other students, and to gather more clues the protagonist has to interrogate and eventually best those students and others at mahjong to get ever closer to finding the missing girl.

Jantei Monogatari

Overview & History

Developed by RIOT and published by Wolf Team, *Jantei Monogatari* (often associated with its PC-98 roots) found its way to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis in 1994, late in the console's lifespan. This niche release is a captivating fusion of traditional Japanese mahjong and the visual novel genre, featuring heavy fantasy role-playing elements. Unlike standard mahjong simulators of the 16-bit era, *Jantei Monogatari* weaves an eccentric narrative where players step into the shoes of a young hero tasked with battling a pantheon of fantastical, often whimsical female rivals in high-stakes tile combat. Because of its suggestive anime aesthetics and text-heavy adventure segments, the title remained an exclusive import rarity for decades, cementing its status as a sought-after collector's item for retro enthusiasts seeking unconventional Genesis software.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops between two distinct phases: narrative exploration and standard Japanese *Riichi* mahjong matches. During the story segments, players navigate menus to converse with quirky characters, triggering dialogue trees that set up the next match. Once at the table, the rules adhere to traditional 4-player or 1-on-1 mahjong variants depending on the stage, where forming specific yaku (scoring hands) depletes the opponent's health bar rather than just standard points. To shake up the traditional ruleset, *Jantei Monogatari* introduces magical "spell" items and special character abilities that players can trigger between turns. These moves allow you to manipulate tiles, peek at hidden walls, or inflict status effects on opponents, adding a tactical, RPG-lite layer to the centuries-old table game. The interface features colorful 16-bit character portraits that react dynamically to wins, losses, and risky draws.
