Shura no Mon is a so-called “command action” game based on the manga by Masatoshi Kawahara. The player controls Tsukumo by selecting commands from a list, using different attacks and defensive maneuvers at the appropriate time, with the results shown via brief animated sequences. Between bouts, lightly-animated visual scenes progress the story. The plot closely follows the first arc from the manga, starting with Tsukumo’s arrival at the legendary Jinmukan dojo.

Released exclusively in Japan in 1992 by Sunsoft, Shura no Mon (Gateway of the Asura) is a cult-classic fighting game adapted from the acclaimed martial arts manga by Masatoshi Kawahara. The storyline follows Tsukumo Mutsu, the young bearer of the legendary Mutsu Enmei-ryu—an ancient, unarmed combat style designed to defeat multiple armed opponents seamlessly. Eschewing the supernatural fireballs of standard 90s fighters, the game grounds its narrative in gritty, realistic tournament-style martial arts tournaments, where Tsukumo must face various masters of karate, kickboxing, and professional wrestling to prove the supremacy of his bloodline.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike typical side-scrolling or standard two-dimensional arcade fighters, Shura no Mon utilizes a distinct over-the-shoulder pseudo-3D perspective reminiscent of Data East's Outlanders or Sega's The Last Battle. Players maneuver Tsukumo across a circular arena ring, dodging and weaving around opponents before closing the distance to strike. The gameplay mechanics emphasize tactical timing, stamina management, and precise spacing rather than frantic button-mashing. Tsukumo’s repertoire includes signature Mutsu Enmei-ryu techniques: rapid-fire palm strikes, joint-breaking throws, and the devastating counter-attack known as the Tatsumaki Senpukyaku equivalent, which punishes greedy attackers. Health bars are supplemented by psychological and physical stress meters, forcing players to read their opponent's stance and exploit openings. The sprite work captures the manga's intense, angular aesthetic, delivering brutal impact frames and cinematic grappling sequences that faithfully recreate Tsukumo's journey from arrogant prodigy to undisputed martial arts legend.
