Description

RoboCop 3 is a side-scrolling platform shooter. You get missions (such as rescuing your colleagues who are being kept hostages), which are divided into several smaller levels. The levels usually consist of several platforms, and are heavily populated by enemies who shoot at you. You can gather special repair kits, which will be used to restore your health after you’ve completed a level. “RoboCop 3” is more of a shooter than its predecessors, having more and tougher enemies.

RoboCop 3

Overview & History

Developed by Probe Software and published by Flying Edge in 1993, RoboCop 3 for the Sega Genesis adapts the third cinematic installment of Orion Pictures' cyberpunk franchise. Unlike its Commodore Amiga or arcade counterparts, the Genesis version distinguishes itself by shifting away from pure side-scrolling run-and-gun tropes into a multi-phase structural experiment. Following the dystopian narrative of Detroit's corporate takeover by the ruthless Omni Consumer Products (OCP) and the displacement of the 'Metro West' citizens, players guide the cybernetic law enforcer through a campaign designed to dismantle the oppressive Rehabilitation Division. The game utilizes digitized sprites and a gritty, industrial color palette to evoke the ruined urban landscape of Old Detroit, accompanied by an energetic chiptune soundtrack that reimagines Basil Poledouris's iconic cinematic themes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay in *RoboCop 3* breaks away from linear conventions by dividing the experience into distinct stages, alternating between traditional side-scrolling platforming, first-person target-shooting sequences, and even vehicular combat piloting the jetpack. As Alex Murphy, players command a heavy, deliberate movement set that authentically reflects his armored, robotic physiology—complete with a heavy footfall and a distinct lack of agile acrobatics. Combat relies heavily on Murphy's standard Auto-9 pistol, alongside upgradable weaponry collected across stages, such as the Cobra Assault Cannon. Players must carefully balance ammunition reserves while navigating environmental hazards, sniper nests, and waves of armed Rehab mercenaries, culminating in tense boss encounters against rival cyborgs and heavy-duty OCP enforcement units.
