Description

Handy Harvy is an arcade action homebrew Genesis title that draws inspiration from titles like Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew, but also Fix It Felix Jr. from the Disney movie Wreck-it Ralph. Although it was released after the NES game Get’em Gary by the same developer, development on the Genesis title was started first.

Rusty kidnaps a blonde girl and climbs a building with her, destroying windows on the way. It is up to Harvy to get to Rusty and fix the windows in the meantime. Each level is a single building that consists of several fixed, single screens. Harvy starts at the bottom and needs to fix all broken windows on three levels to win the section and move on to a higher part in the next screen. This continues until the roof of the building is reached, the girl is brought back and Rusty is defeated.

Harvy only has 75 seconds to win a screen with multiple ledges. He can also only climb up when there is a pipe and sometimes there are statues that block the way. In the meantime Rusty moves about on the highest ledge and constantly drops projectiles that hurt Harvy and take away one of his three starting lives. Points are scored by fixing windows, winning screens and winning levels. Every now and then bonus items appear that need to be picked up quickly before they disappear, such as additional times or lives.

The game contains a cooperative two-player multiplayer mode with a second player controller Gary and simultaneous gameplay.

Overview & History

Released deep into the 16-bit era, Handy Harvy is an obscure platforming gem developed for the Sega Genesis. Originally conceived by an independent European studio and later picked up for limited cartridge runs, the game tells the whimsical yet surprisingly tense story of Harvy, an overworked municipal handyman trapped inside a massive, sentient skyscraper that has gone entirely haywire due to a rogue artificial intelligence. Armed only with his trusty toolbelt and an indomitable blue-collar spirit, Harvy must navigate labyrinthine maintenance shafts, dodge malfunctioning robotic appliances, and recalibrate the building's central mainframe before the entire complex collapses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Handy Harvy differentiates itself from contemporary Genesis platformers by integrating physics-based puzzle elements with traditional run-and-jump action. Players traverse six sprawling industrial zones, ranging from flooded boiler rooms to electrified server corridors. Harvy's primary weapon is a heavy-duty adjustable wrench, which can be swung at malfunctioning toaster-bots and flying desk fans, or hurled boomerang-style to hit distant switches. Crucially, Harvy can scavenge spare parts—screws, gears, and copper wire—scattered across each stage. These items aren't just for points; they act as currency at vending terminals to upgrade Harvy's utility belt, granting temporary access to a blowtorch for melting steel barricades or suction cups for scaling vertical glass panels. The game features non-linear stage exploration, requiring players to restore power to specific circuit breakers to unlock exit elevators, all while racing against a relentless countdown timer.
