Its a spellbinding age of magic, fire-spewing dragons, and skeletons in armor! Fight on the back of a giant turtle! Battle on the wings of an enchanted eagle! Vanquish and ride flame-breathing monsters to victory!

As the Warrior, swing a mighty sword and shatter your enemies with clouds of mushroom magic. As the Amazon, kick, smash, and blast your enemies with curtains of fire. As the Dwarf, strike with the Golden Axe, somersault, and scorch the invaders with lightning!

Find the prison of the King and Princess, save them, and return peace to the world. So far, the score is Death Adder – thousands, You – Zero. Its time to change the score!

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Golden Axe is a legendary fantasy side-scrolling beat-'em-up heavily inspired by Conan the Barbarian. Set in the war-torn mythical realm of Yuria, the storyline follows three heroic warriors seeking vengeance against the evil tyrant Death Adder, who has kidnapped the King and Princess and stolen the magical weapon known as the Golden Axe. Originally a massive arcade hit, the Genesis port by Makoto Uchida's team introduced home players to cooperative arcade-style carnage, complete with exclusive bonus stages where players kick running thieves to steal extra magic potions and food rations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Golden Axe blends traditional melee combat with strategic magic usage and mounted beast-riding. Players traverse picturesque scrolling stages—ranging from the back of a giant turtle to the towering Eagle Island—pounding skeletal warriors, Amazonians, and armored knights. The combat system centers on three primary inputs: jumping, attacking, and casting magic. Each of the three playable characters—Ax Battler the barbarian, Gilius Thunderhead the dwarf, and Tyris Flare the amazon—wields distinct weaponry, reach, and elemental magic. Players can collect blue magic pots dropped by glowing thieves to unleash devastating screen-clearing elemental spells, scaling in power depending on how many pots are invested. Furthermore, players can knock enemies off ferocious riding beasts like the fire-breathing Dragon and the tail-whipping Chicken-Leg, mounting them to turn the tide of battle with devastating charge attacks.
