Description

Are you ready for this? Number One of the Top Ten Most Bizarre Things to Happen This Year: Garth has been kidnapped! No way, you say? Hway!! It’s the work of a most heinous goon – a pixelated purple putridosity called Zantar. And now you, Wayne Campbell, must heartily rescue your excellent sidekick from a fate most unbecoming!

Armed with you mighty guitar and the power to Schwing, you must brave the perils of Kramer’s Music Store, Stan Mikita’s Donut Shop, the Gaeworks nightclub and suburbia. There, you will spar with such dweeboids as monster bagpipes, accordions and kazoos (shyeah, rright!), spewing coffee cups and dangerous disco balls (as if!), hair-whipping headbangers and the strange Psycho Hose Beast (way!)

Wayne's World

Overview & History

Released by THQ in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Wayne's World adapts the iconic Saturday Night Live sketch and Paramount film into a side-scrolling platformer. The game places players in the flannel shirt of Wayne Campbell as he navigates the bizarre, suburban landscape of Aurora, Illinois. Armed only with his trusty electric guitar, Wayne must rescue his sidekick Garth Algar and save their public-access cable show from cancellation by the ruthless executive Benjamin Kane. The Genesis port stands out from its Super Nintendo counterpart by featuring distinct level design, harder difficulty, and digitized voice samples that faithfully capture Mike Myers' cinematic cadence. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release for its unforgiving platforming and cryptic progression, it remains a fascinating piece of 90s licensed gaming history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay shifts dynamically between standard platforming and surreal dream sequences. Players traverse diverse stages like the Gasworks and the local mall, collecting musical notes, backstage passes, and soda cans to replenish health. Wayne's primary offensive maneuver is strumming his guitar to unleash sonic wave attacks that knock back suburban punks, mutant rats, and floating boomboxes. Players can also utilize a pogo jump off enemies' heads to reach high ledges. Between traditional levels, Wayne shrinks down to pilot a guitar pick in a top-down, vertically scrolling shooter stage mimicking the arcade classic Aerosmith's Revolution X, adding much-needed variety. Health is measured by a 'Party Time' meter that depletes with each hit, forcing careful timing during precision jumps over industrial hazards and bottomless pits.
