Description

WWF Raw is a professional wrestling game featuring up to twelve superstars (ten in the GameGear, eight in the GameBoy version) from the World Wrestling Federation: Bret “Hit Man” Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, 1-2-3 Kid, Diesel, Doink, Lex Luger, Luna Vachon, Owen Hart, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, and Yokozuna.

In this game, player-controlled wrestlers attempt to pin the opponents to the mat by reducing their power meter until they can fight no more. There is a large number of moves to perform, including turnbuckle maneuvers and “illegal” acts such as hitting the opponent with a metal folding chair.

This game supports up to four simultaneous players, and has the following modes: One-on-One, Tag Team, Bedlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, Raw Endurance Match, and Rematch.

WWF Raw

Overview & History

Released by Acclaim Entertainment in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, WWF Raw marked the fourth and final installment of Sculptured Software’s 16-bit World Wrestling Federation trilogy. Serving as a direct sequel to WWF Royal Rumble, this title introduced a massively expanded roster including legends like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Diesel, and Razor Ramon, alongside the franchise debuts of Bam Bam Bigelow, Yokozuna, and Doink the Clown. Unlike previous iterations, Raw brought the hard-hitting action of Monday nights into players' living rooms with a unique television-style presentation, complete with updated ring aprons, pyrotechnics, and the debut of the career-defining "Bedlam" and "Raw" match variants.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

WWF Raw refines the grappling engine of its predecessors by introducing an expanded arsenal of signature moves and high-flying maneuvers, utilizing a traditional button-mashing tug-of-war system when wrestlers lock up. Alongside standard singles and tag team bouts, the game innovated with chaotic match types like the Survivor Series elimination match, Bedlam (an early precursor to hardcore brawls where multiple wrestlers enter simultaneously with weapons), and Royal Rumble modes. The roster benefits from unprecedented move-set depth: The Undertaker can execute his devastating tombstone piledriver, Shawn Michaels utilizes his sweet chin music superkick, and Bret Hart locks opponents into the dreaded sharpshooter. Wrestlers also feature stamina meters that deplete during prolonged grappling exchanges, requiring tactical pacing and strategic use of turnbuckle climbs and running attacks to secure a pinfall or submission victory.
