Description

Check it out… We’re ToeJam and Earl. And we ran into a small problem. More specifically, a large planet (I shoulda never let Earl drive…). Help us hunt down the pieces to our rocket ship and we’ll let you jam out some tunes on our megawatt rapmaster. Deal?

WHOAH!! We’re bumpin’ into some of the weirdest creatures in the universe: Earthlings. Boogie down with bewitching hula girls. Block a nerd herd. Or hurl tomatoes at a crazed dentist with a drill.

Split up and scope things out. Or hang together to share your stuff. Pick up presents you can use – like wings, rocket skates and inner tubes. Or ones you’ll wish you hadn’t opened – like bees, tomato rain and school books. So grab a friend – or join the jamminest party you’ll ever play!

ToeJam & Earl

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1991 for the Genesis, ToeJam & Earl is a funk-fueled rogue-like action game developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions. The storyline follows two totally chill alien rappers from the planet Funkotron who crash their Rapmaster Rocketship into Earth after navigating through a meteor shower. Stranded on our strange, blocky planet, the funky duo must recover all ten scattered pieces of their spaceship to make it back home. Unlike typical side-scrollers of the 16-bit era, this title introduced a pioneering cooperative split-screen mode, isometric perspective, and randomly generated floating-island maps, setting it apart as a quirky cult classic that heavily satirized early 90s suburban American culture with its eccentric enemies like Nerd herds, Boogeymen, and rampaging shoppers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate vertically scrolling, floating islands in search of rocket fragments, utilizing a radar at the bottom of the screen to track ship pieces and hidden presents. These wrapped boxes contain randomized items ranging from helpful gear—like Rocket Skates for blinding speed, Icarus Wings for flight, and Inner Tubes for water traversal—to detrimental gags like Total Bummer or Decoy presents. ToeJam, the taller red three-legged alien, moves faster, while Earl, the rotund orange two-legged alien, has more health. Both characters can talk to Wise Man carrots to level up their "player titles" (starting as "Creep" and eventually reaching "Funk Lord") and jump over obstacles. Random encounters with the Earthlings keep players on edge, as enemies possess bizarre attack patterns. The game combines exploration, inventory management, and cooperative panic into an utterly unique package defined by its iconic, slap bass-heavy funk soundtrack.
