Description

Body Count has a simple story: aliens have invaded the Earth, and a lone soldier who is particularly skilled at shooting and sniping is called to save the planet.

The game is an arcade-style shooter. The player shoots from a first person perspective at enemies that keep appearing on the screen. Once a sufficient amount of enemies has been eliminated, the player is automatically transferred to the next fixed screen. On the way the player can pick special items that allow the use of a powerful all-screen attack a limited number of times.

Body Count

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Europe in 1994 by Sega, Body Count is a cult-classic, sci-fi run-and-gun shooter developed by Europress Software for the Mega Drive/Genesis. The storyline thrusts players into a dystopian future overrun by hostile biomechanical mutants and rogue cyborgs. As a heavily armed futuristic commando, your mission is to blast through industrial corridors and alien lairs to dismantle the central AI threat. Despite arriving late in the Genesis lifecycle with striking pre-rendered 3D sprites and a gritty cyberpunk aesthetic, it flew under the radar due to its limited regional distribution.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Body Count combines traditional side-scrolling platforming with intense directional shooting. Unlike standard genre contemporaries, it features a unique crosshair mechanic and destructible environmental elements. Players must juggle standard rapid-fire laser blasts with screen-clearing smart bombs while dodging projectiles and navigating treacherous platforming layouts. The game includes multi-tiered stages, subterranean labyrinth zones, and massive boss encounters that require precise reflexes and weapon management. Hidden power-ups scattered throughout the debris grant temporary invincibility, spread shots, and heavy plasma upgrades vital for surviving the punishing difficulty curve.
