Description

When noted 21st-century scientist Doc Yoshimaya fell in love with one of his C-Life artificial-intelligence creations, he uploaded himself into his computer where her program core merged with his DNA, and half-human, half-C-Life, Pulseman was born. Doc Yoshimaya’s mind twisted as he emerged back into real life, and he became evil Doc Waruyama. Use Pulseman’s ability to harness electricity as a weapon with his Volteccer attack as a means of rapid transport to fight Waruyama’s Galaxy Gang across seven crazy stages.

Pulseman

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994, Pulseman is a cult-classic platformer developed by Game Freak prior to their massive international success with Pokémon. Directed by Ken Sugimori and programmed by Junichi Masuda, this vibrant 16-bit title showcases the raw creative talent that would soon define Nintendo's premier monster-catching franchise. The storyline plunges players into the year 2015, where the brilliant but deranged computer scientist Dr. Warazu has mutated into the digital terrorist C-Board, vowing to conquer the real world through the Global Net. To combat this cybernetic threat, the heroic Dr. Yoshiyama creates Pulseman, a half-human, half-computer cyborg born from digitized data. While the original Japanese release was a physical cartridge rarity, Western audiences eventually experienced Pulseman through the Wii Virtual Console and Sega's retro compilation services.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Pulseman blends high-speed momentum-based platforming with inventive electric combat mechanics across colorful, futuristic stages. As the titular hero, players can jump, slide, and unleash basic energy attacks to defeat rogue robots and digital anomalies. Pulseman’s defining gameplay feature is his ability to transform into a ball of pure electricity by double-tapping the jump button. In this electrified state, known as the 'Volt Tackle'—which famously predates Pikachu's signature move in the Pokémon series—Pulseman ricochets off walls at high velocity, destroying enemies and traversing vertical environments with pinball-like physics. Managing this momentum requires precise spatial awareness, as players must calculate trajectory and angle before unleashing their devastating plasma bounces.
