Description
Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden is a fighting game that maintains the dual screen mode previously seen in Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden series on SNES, which allowed you to be far from the opponent yet still be able to see him by having the screen split between the two characters. This is important to note, as the most damaging attack of the game could be just executed from far away of your opponent, the energy fireball projectiles. These special attacks also need that you have your KI bar (which unlike energy one, is rechargeable) to a considerable level and the only way to block them is by means of a long button combination.
The constitution of the characters is based strictly on the Freezer and Cell sagas (Son Goku SSJ, Son Gohan SSJ2, Piccolo, Vegeta SSJ, Future Trunks SSJ, Krilin, Recoome, Ginyū, Freezer, A-18 and Perfect Cell), with special mention to Krilin, Ginyū and Recoome, who made here their first appearance in a fighting game. There are also 9 scenarios available, all of them corresponding to recognizable areas of the anime itself, some also appearing for 2 times but in different status (i.e., “normal” Namek and Namek “in flames”).

Overview & History
Released exclusively in Japan and Europe in 1994 by Bandai, Dragon Ball Z: Buyuu Retsuden (known as Dragon Ball Z: L'Appel du Destin in France) is a rare technical marvel. Developing a fighting game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was no small feat, yet TOSE managed to craft a visually striking title that captured the bombastic energy of Akira Toriyama's universe. Spanning the Android and Cell Games sagas, the game features an original narrative framing device where fighters seek out the Dragon Balls. Unlike its Super Famicom contemporary Super Butouden, Buyuu Retsuden eschews the traditional split-screen camera system, utilizing a dynamic single-screen arena where players can launch opponents across vast distances or knock them into the stratosphere.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Combat revolves around high-speed aerial skirmishes and resource management. Characters possess a Ki gauge essential for unleashing devastating projectile supers like Goku’s Kamehameha or Vegeta’s Final Flash. A standout feature is the unique melee clash system: when certain heavy attacks collide, characters lock in a button-mashing struggle to determine dominance. The roster includes 11 playable fighters, each endowed with distinct flight capabilities, standard melee combos, and signature teleportation counters. Stages are expansive and interactive, allowing players to shatter the terrain with heavy blasts. The pixel art brilliantly recreates the anime's aesthetic, complete with fluid sprite scaling and booming, distinctively synthesized Genesis audio.
