Hurricanes

Overview & History

Released by U.S. Gold in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Hurricanes is a platforming title based on the DiC animated television series of the same name. The storyline follows a multicultural superhero baseball and rescue team blessed with weather-manipulating powers, who must travel the globe to thwart the evil plans of the villainous Dr. Apocalypse and his bumbling minions. Unlike many licensed titles of the 16-bit era that suffered from rushed development, this game attempted to inject genuine tactical depth into its run-and-gun platforming formula by emphasizing environmental manipulation alongside traditional side-scrolling combat across varied international stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players primarily control the team's leader, Bruiser, as he navigates through multi-tiered stages filled with environmental hazards, robotic enemies, and treacherous platform gaps. Rather than relying solely on standard melee strikes, Bruiser utilizes a specialized weather cannon capable of sucking in ambient air currents and firing concentrated blasts of wind, lightning, and ice to freeze or destroy foes. Throughout the stages, players can collect baseballs to unleash powerful projectile attacks and rescue trapped teammates who grant temporary invulnerability or screen-clearing special attacks. The level design heavily incorporates verticality, requiring precise jumping, wind-gliding mechanics, and puzzle-solving involving destructible terrain to uncover hidden power-ups and secret exit routes.
