Description

Tetris was a game for the Sega Mega Drive that was cancelled due to licensing issues. The game was subsequently released on the Sega Mega-Tech, an arcade cabinet that played Mega Drive games.

The game was scheduled to be released on 15 April 1989, and was licensed through Tengen, who had also sold Bullet-Proof Software the rights for the Famicom. In March or April 1989 the game’s release was postponed, then cancelled, of Sega’s own volition after they heard of Nintendo’s acquisition of the console license.

Tetris (Sanritsu Denki)

Overview & History

Released in 1990 during the height of the 16-bit console wars, *Tetris* for the Sega Genesis is a fascinating and elusive piece of video game history. Developed by Sanritsu Denki—a studio known for handling arcade conversions and system ports—this particular version was famously caught in the crossfire of the infamous Tengen legal battles. Because Tengen held exclusive U.S. console rights for Atari, Sanritsu Denki’s Genesis version saw a very limited release, primarily distributed in Japan and select Asian territories, making it a coveted holy grail for retro collectors today. While Alexey Pajitnov’s iconic puzzle formula inherently lacks a traditional narrative storyline, this iteration immerses players in a sleek, space-themed aesthetic featuring cosmic backgrounds and progressive difficulty stages rather than deep lore.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the stripped-down Game Boy or official Nintendo iterations, the Sanritsu Denki port introduces distinctive mechanics that elevate the traditional block-stacking puzzle experience. As the seven classic tetrominoes—the I, J, L, O, S, T, and Z blocks—fall from the top of the matrix, players must manipulate them using responsive rotation physics and instantaneous drop capabilities. This version incorporates a robust two-player head-to-head competitive mode, where clearing multiple lines simultaneously sends 'garbage' rows to clutter your opponent's playfield, introducing high-stakes tactical warfare. The gravity curve scales aggressively, demanding rapid spatial awareness and precise reflexes. Furthermore, the game features mesmerizing, synthesized chiptune renditions of classic Russian folk tunes, including the immortal 'Korobeiniki,' enhancing the hypnotic, addictive gameplay loop.
