Description

Langrisser II is a sequel to Warsong (whose original title is Langrisser). The events of the game take place several years after those described in Warsong. Gone is the benevolent kingdom of Baltia, and a new power has risen – the Rayguard Empire, which has made a pact with the malevolent Lord Böser, whose intention is to find the most powerful evil sword in the land, the Alhazard. The main hero of the game, the knight Elwin, must help the Descendants of Light to retrieve the legendary holy sword Langrisser, the only artifact that is more powerful than Alhazard.

Like its predecessor, this is a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements. The army is divided into soldier units and generals, who fight alone and who are usually stronger than a whole unit. Before the scenario begins, you must hire soldiers, buy weapons and items, etc. During the battle, if you come into contact with an enemy unit, an automatic battle sequence occurs. You can also cast healing spells on your units or offensive spells to hurt the enemy.

Langrisser II

Overview & History

Released by Masaya in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Langrisser II stands as a monumental tactical role-playing game that refined the genre's formula long before its PlayStation remake, Warsong II, or modern tactical revivals. Developed under the creative direction of Nippon Computer Systems and featuring the iconic, ethereal character designs of Satoshi Urushihara, this epic sequel takes place centuries after the original conflict. Players step into the worn leather boots of Elwin, a wandering swordsman who becomes unwittingly embroiled in a continent-wide holy war between the forces of Light, darkness, and the imperial ambitions of the Dalsia Empire. Unlike many linear RPGs of its era, Langrisser II introduced a groundbreaking moral alignment system. Depending on Elwin's dialogue choices and battlefield actions, the narrative diverges into multiple branching paths, allowing players to ally with the forces of darkness, remain loyal to the light, or carve out an independent empire.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Combat departs from traditional grid-based skirmishes by employing a unique commander-and-troop battalion structure. Before entering a battle phase, players select their primary commanders—such as the fierce knight Hein or the magic-wielding Jessica—and allocate a budget to hire specialized mercenary units ranging from heavy phalanxes and archers to flying dragons and elite wizards. Positioning is everything; commanders provide critical aura bonuses to adjacent troops, multiplying their offensive and defensive capabilities. Initiative, terrain advantages, and magic spell deployment (spanning elemental fireballs to game-changing healing and teleportation incantations) dictate victory. As commanders gain experience, they unlock branching class-change trees, permitting custom evolutions from foot soldiers to royal guards, silver knights, or dark lords. The weapon triangle, coupled with a dense 10-scenario campaign per major route, ensures exceptional tactical depth and high replay value.
