Description

Waterworld is an adaptation of the 1995 film of the same title. Players take on the role of the Mariner, a survivor in post-apocalyptic Earth, as he searches for the mythical Dry Land.

Gameplay takes place over three different types of levels. In the first, taking place in isometric overhead view, players sail an armed trimaran in order to shoot down enemy Smokers and rescue residents of atolls. In the second, players dive underwater beneath buoys from a side-scrolling perspective to collect items and dodge enemies. In the third, players navigate enemy bases from a side-scrolling perspective while shooting enemies. Players can revisit earlier levels from the world map after playing them.

This is conceptually similar to the SNES adaptation, and features similar art, but with different gameplay.

Waterworld

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the 16-bit era, *Waterworld* for the Sega Genesis is an ambitious tie-in to Kevin Costner’s cult-classic post-apocalyptic sci-fi film. Originally slated for widespread release by Ocean Software, the Genesis port faced severe production hurdles and shifting publisher landscapes, resulting in an infamously scarce release primarily restricted to European and select international markets. This rarity has since turned the cartridge into a sought-after collector's item. The storyline drops players directly into the boots of the nameless Mariner, navigating a melted Earth completely submerged beneath the endless Pacific. Your mission is to survive the relentless assaults of the villainous Smokers, rescue innocent atoll inhabitants, and ultimately track down the fabled, mythic sanctuary known only as Dryland, all while managing your scarce fresh water and fuel resources.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers of the era, Ocean crafted a multifaceted gameplay loop that mirrors the movie's gritty survival themes. Players alternate between two distinct play styles: intense, high-speed vehicular combat aboard the Mariner's heavily armed Trimaran, and claustrophobic, tactical on-foot exploration of enemy atolls and rusted oil tankers. When piloting the vessel, you must manually adjust sail speeds while simultaneously manning pivot-mounted harpoons and depth charges to blow Smoker jet-skis and scout planes out of the sky. On foot, the Mariner relies on a spear gun for ranged combat, a combat knife for close-quarters stealth takedowns, and a grappling hook to scale rusted scaffolding. Navigation requires careful map-reading across a grid-based ocean, avoiding toxic waste zones, and trading precious salvaged artifacts at floating merchant trading posts to upgrade hull armor and weapon payloads.
