Description

Unreleased for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Itchy & Scratchy is a single player platform sidescroller. The player controls Itchy, the mouse, and must defeat Scratchy, the cat, with a variety of weapons. Itchy caries a default mallet, but can pick up additional weapons on particular levels. Each of the seven levels takes place in a different fictional location and is designed as a maze of doors and platforms. After defeating Scratchy, he usually will return with a special contraption to attack Itchy, and must therefore be defeated again.

Released in 1994 by Acclaim Entertainment for the Sega Genesis, The Itchy & Scratchy Game brings television's favorite ultra-violent cartoon duo from The Simpsons into a chaotic side-scrolling platformer. Developed by Bits Studios, the title casts the player as Itchy the mouse, relentlessly pursued by his feline nemesis, Scratchy. Capitalizing on the peak 90s popularity of the animated show, the game translates the cartoon's trademark slapstick gore into a fast-paced interactive format. Spanning bizarre historical and futuristic epochs—from a prehistoric jungle to a nuclear power plant and a pirate-infested Caribbean—the journey is an onslaught of hazardous obstacles, trap-laden environments, and relentless enemies ripped straight from classic show segments.

Players navigate Itchy through linear, hazard-filled levels while managing a health bar represented by "lives" and fending off Scratchy, who frequently stalks the player as an intermittent boss or background menace. Itchy's arsenal is a love letter to cartoon destruction, featuring an upgradable inventory of absurd weaponry including mallets, dynamite, buzzsaws, laser guns, and portable black holes. Mechanics require precision platforming, quick reflexes, and clever item usage to bypass environmental hazards like acid pools, conveyor belts, and snapping piranhas. Environmental interactivity is high; players can trigger traps against pursuing enemies and collect hidden cheese wedges for bonus points.
