Description

Beastball is an unreleased Sega Mega Drive sports game. It is a console adaption of the 1993 Amiga title Brutal Football/Crazy Football (ported to the Amiga CD32 in 1994, IBM PC in 1995 and to the Atari Jagauar in 1994 as Brutal Sports Football). Beastball was also set to be released on the Super Nintendo but was presumably cancelled at the same time as this Mega Drive adaption.

A prototype has since been released showing a mostly completed game. Both the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo releases were advertised in North America during late 1993, possibly asserting either a release in time for Christmas of that year, or in early 1994. The Mega Drive version was also sent out in small numbers for the press for review.

Despite being built in Europe, no plans appear to have been put in place to release Beastball outside of North America.

Overview & History

Released in 1994 exclusively for the Sega Genesis, Beastball is a brutal, futuristic sports title developed by Treco that fused traditional team sports with unbridled MMA-style combat. Set in the dystopian year 2099, the storyline centers on a hyper-violent interstellar tournament where genetically spliced mutant athletes, cyborgs, and alien gladiators compete in a lethal arena sport. While it missed out on a wider arcade or global multi-platform release, it earned a cult following for its uncompromising blend of fast-paced arcade action and deep combat mechanics. Unlike standard football or hockey games, the objective isn't just to score goals by throwing the glowing energy sphere into the opponent's net, but to systematically incapacitate the opposing team's roster using vicious melee attacks, environmental hazards, and specialized character moves.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Beastball stands apart from its 16-bit contemporaries through its dual-focus on ball-handling and blood-sport combat. Players select a roster of three unique beasts, each boasting distinct attributes in speed, armor, strength, and projectile capability. The matches take place in enclosed, trap-laden arenas featuring electric walls and shifting terrain. Character moves are deeply varied; heavy-hitters can execute devastating bone-crushing suplexes and ground slams, while agile mutants utilize dash-attacks and ranged acid spits to disrupt ball carriers. If a player’s health bar drops to zero, they are temporarily stunned or removed from the play, creating intense power-play scenarios where the opposing team can aggressively pound the goal. The game features both a grueling single-player tournament ladder and a chaotic two-player competitive versus mode that truly highlights the chaotic, strategic depth of its combat engine.
