Description

Originally created for PC by John Bell (Lazy Brain Games) Bug Hunt had already proved very popular on the NEC PC-Engine in the Neo Coding Compo in 2013. It is now time for the 16-bit SEGA to get a version of the game and what’s more, it’s free! This is once again courtesy of Afromonkeys (Jack Nolddor and Davidian), who, as usual, have also given us a quality conversion. We had already mentioned Chase, a NES game portage by the same creators, which proved to be a pleasant surprise. Note that this version of Bug Hunt is compatible with the Mega Mouse so that you can enjoy the same experience as the PC version.

Bug Hunt

Overview & History

Released during the early 1990s era of the Sega Genesis, 'Bug Hunt' is a cult-classic arcade-style shooter that tasks players with exterminating aggressive, mutated arthropods across industrial colonies. Originally developed to showcase the console's capability for fast-paced sprite rendering, the game offers a frantic survival experience. Unlike standard light-gun games of the era, this title blends precision crosshair aiming with side-scrolling platforming elements, making it a unique hybrid in the Genesis library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control Sergeant Vance, an elite exterminator armed with a pulse rifle and heavy-duty flamethrower. Across five distinct bio-dome stages—ranging from toxic swamps to radioactive laboratories—waves of radioactive beetles, mantises, and Queen Wasps descend upon the screen. Character moves include standard directional sprinting, a short evasive dodge-roll, and a high-intensity smart bomb ability that clears all visible on-screen insects. Players must carefully manage ammunition reserves and thermal coolant gauges to prevent weapon overheating during intense boss encounters.
