Description

Kiss Shot is a simple pool game for one to four players. It uses an overhead viewpoint and shot system very similar to Data East’s Side Pocket, and features a standard nine ball mode for one or two players, as well as a ten ball game called “Boulard” which incorporates elements of bowling into the rules and allows for up to four players. On each shot, the player can set the direction, hit point, hit angle, and shot power.

Kiss Shot

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1994 by Sage's Epoch for the Sega Genesis, Kiss Shot is a wildly eccentric, sports-anime hybrid that mashes up traditional Japanese 9-ball pocket billiards with high-stakes martial arts combat. Long before casual sports games dominated the 16-bit era, developers took a bizarre gamble by weaving a narrative about a disgraced underground pool hustler named Kenji, who must defeat a syndicate of mutant cue-masters to save his dojo. While it never received a Western localization during its initial run, this cult classic has since gained legendary status among retro collectors for its vibrant, surreal pixel art, catchy synthesized jazz soundtrack, and unapologetically weird thematic fusion of chalk, cues, and high kicks.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Kiss Shot alternates between overhead tactical billiards rounds and frantic one-on-one side-scrolling brawls. During the pool segments, players must line up precise bank shots using an advanced physics engine that calculates spin, velocity, and table friction. Successfully sinking balls charges your "Ki Meter," which carries over into the fighting rounds. Once the action shifts to fisticuffs, Kenji can unleash devastating special moves like the "Spinning Cue Tornado," a flurry of overhead staff strikes, and the screen-clearing "Eight-Ball Blast," which launches flaming billiard balls at opponents. Players must manage a stamina gauge while dodging flying chalk and bouncing off padded bumper walls that double as arena boundaries.
