Description

Magic Bubble is an unlicensed 1993 puzzle game developed by C&E for the Sega Mega Drive. It was the only game produced by C&E (a Taiwanese company) where the packaging, instructions and in-game text is all in English. The game involves matching like-coloured bubbles which float to the top of the screen.

In the 2000s, publishing rights to the game were purchased by Super Fighter Team, who also published a translation of another of C&E’s games, Beggar Prince.

Magic Bubble

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the Sega Genesis's commercial lifespan, Magic Bubble is an obscure puzzle-platformer developed by Samsung/Sanritsu that heavily channels classic 16-bit arcade aesthetics. Originally conceived in the Korean market, the game tells the whimsical tale of a young fairy named Pip, whose magical dreamscape is invaded by the Somnus Syndicate—a league of dark phantoms seeking to weaponize collective nightmares. While it never received a wide Western release upon its initial 1993 debut, cartridge variants have since become coveted collector's items. The game blends the grid-based cascading mechanics of classic match-three titles with vertical platforming exploration, setting it apart from standard puzzle clones by forcing players to constantly juggle physics-based traversal and reflexive spell-casting simultaneously.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Levels are structured as vertical towers where Pip must clear a requisite number of floating, color-coded magic bubbles before the screen continuously scrolls upward. Players shoot colored spheres upward from Pip's wand to create clusters of three or more matching hues, which then pop and trigger cascading chain reactions. Environmental hazards, moving platforms, and patrolling nightmare minions require precise positioning. Character abilities extend beyond simple shooting; Pip can perform a double-jump to reach high ledges, charge up a "Nova Blast" to clear stubborn bubble clusters, and temporarily levitate using a floating bubble shield. Boss encounters at the end of every world shift the gameplay entirely, demanding that players strategically bounce magic projectiles off moving shields to deplete the boss's health bar before the arena fills with indestructible debris.
