Description

Five-year-old Shinnosuke Nohara is the epitome of noisy children: loud and inappropriate, infuriating to his parents, and hilarious to onlookers. Shin-chan is always getting in trouble with his parents and saying bizarre or offensive things to everyone he meets. Every so often, though, he’ll try to do what his mom wants him to, but more often than not, he’ll misunderstand and simply confound his parents further.

Arashi o Yobu Enji (“A Kindergartner Called Tempest”) is one of many games based on the manga and anime created by Yoshito Usui. In four stages, each made up of five areas, Shin-chan must explore his neighborhood looking for a specific object. He can enter houses to ask people for information, but will often end up simply insulting them. He must also avoid or knock over the other children in the neighborhood, and has various ability cards that he can use to assist him, which might give him a water pistol or refill his health. After finding what he’s looking for, Shin-chan will move on to the next area.

Also included is a mini-game mode with eight different mini-games, such as a bubble-blowing contest, a three-legged race, and a desperate search for clothing before school. The entire game, including the mini-games, is filled with dialogue containing the same humor as the source material.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1993 by Sega, *Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi o Yobu Enji* (The Storm-Calling Toddler) brings Yoshito Usui's cheeky, mischievous five-year-old manga protagonist to the 16-bit Genesis. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of the anime adaptation, this platformer drops players into the chaotic daily life of Shinnosuke Nohara. Unlike many licensed titles of the era that simply pasted sprites over generic engines, this game captures the anarchic, irreverent humor of the franchise. Shin-chan's mother, Misae, is furious after he loses his favorite action-masked toy, setting off a sprawling, vibrant suburban adventure across parks, schools, and shopping districts filled with surreal enemies, eccentric neighbors, and bizarre bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is a side-scrolling action platformer divided into distinct episodic stages that mirror episodes of the anime. Shin-chan relies on a quirky repertoire of moves reflecting his kindergarten antics. Instead of a traditional sword or gun, his primary attacks involve dropping his trousers for his infamous "Burichan" (butt-flash) attack to stun foes, using his spinning hip-check, or hurling toys and household objects collected throughout the levels. Players must carefully manage Shin-chan's stamina and mischievous energy while navigating moving platforms, avoiding furious adults, and collecting golden biscuits and action-mask icons. Each stage concludes with a frantic boss encounter against formidable foes like principal "The Boss" or angry kindergarten teachers, requiring precise timing and utilization of Shin-chan's eccentric movement abilities.
