Description

Fastest 1 is a Formula One racing game. The game doesn’t have an official FIA license, but much like Human’s Fire Pro Wrestling series, includes a number of recognizable fictionalized drivers, such as Ayrton Sesna and Satoru Inakajima. The game includes a world championship mode, where the player must start from the lowest rankings and win races to become the F1 world champion. There is also a battle mode where one or two players can race each other or against computer opponents, as well as a test run mode where the player can learn each course and try to set course records. There are a total of 16 different courses, which can be played in either dry, wet, or half-wet conditions, as well as a wide variety of vehicle settings that can be tweaked.

Overview & History

Released by Human Entertainment in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, Fastest 1 is a technically ambitious, Formula One-inspired racing title that attempts to capture the high-stakes world of elite motorsport. While not officially licensed by the FIA, the game channels the spirit of late-80s Grand Prix racing, featuring meticulously crafted replicas of legendary circuits stretching from Monaco to Suzuka. Human Entertainment sought to stand out from the crowded racing genre by integrating realistic pit strategy and a grueling 16-race championship mode that demanded endurance, precise throttle control, and split-second tire management. Though it faced stiff competition from titles like Super Monaco GP, Fastest 1 carved out a dedicated following for its unique pseudo-3D scaling engine and intense sense of velocity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Fastest 1 ditches simplistic arcade handling in favor of a demanding racing simulation. Players must master a distinct three-tiered setup screen before every race, choosing their downforce levels, gear ratios, and tire compounds based on weather forecasts and track layouts. During the race, the low-slung, rear-view perspective emphasizes the blistering speed of the F1 machines. Collisions are punishing; clipping a barrier or a rival vehicle shreds your front wing, drastically reducing steering responsiveness and forcing an unscheduled pit stop. Drafting behind opponents is essential for overtaking on long straights, but misjudging a braking zone into a tight hairpin will send you spinning directly into the unforgiving concrete walls. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the game also features a cooperative mode, allowing a friend to jump in as a teammate to block opposing drivers and secure constructors' championship points.
