Gouketsuji Ichizoku is a one-on-one 2D fighting game in the tradition of Street Fighter 2, in which you select your character from a group of unique fighters and attempt to defeat your opponents in successive fashion using your arcade reflexes and your character’s unique moves.

Features 8 selectable characters, plus a boss character, and single or 2-player Vs gameplay. Also includes a practice mode, battle mode and time attack and life attack modes for extended gameplay.

Overview & History

Released originally as an arcade fighting game by Atlus in 1993, Gouketsuji Ichizoku (known internationally as Power Instinct) was ported to the Sega Genesis in 1994 by Tonkin House. Set against the backdrop of the eccentric Gouketsuji clan, the storyline revolves around an eccentric, cutthroat family tradition: every five years, the powerful clan holds a tournament to determine its next master and leader. The fierce matriarch Oshima Gouketsuji seeks to defend her title, but her ambitious family members—and her long-lost twin sister, Otane—are determined to dethrone her. This Genesis port successfully translated the vibrant character sprites, quirky humor, and distinct supernatural elements of the arcade original onto 16-bit hardware, offering a memorable alternative to the era's standard martial arts fighters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 2D fighters of its time, Gouketsuji Ichizoku introduces a unique "Transformation" mechanic: characters like Oshima and Otane can temporarily morph into their younger, drastically more powerful alter-egos by landing specific special moves, completely altering their speed and attack repertoires. The gameplay operates on a standard 6-button layout (though adaptable to 3-button setups), incorporating fast-paced dashes, double-jumps for aerial mobility, and devastating "Destruction Attacks." The roster consists of eight playable fighters—ranging from an elderly fortune teller to a pop star martial artist and a massive sumo wrestler—each featuring bizarre projectile attacks and exaggerated animations. Matches are decided in best-of-three rounds, accompanied by a quirky, high-energy soundtrack and distinct stage hazards that capture the game's comedic, martial-arts-parody atmosphere.
