Description

Megapanel is a tile-based puzzle game that plays like a mixture of Tetris Attack and a traditional sliding tile puzzle. Blocks rise from the bottom of a well, and the player must slide them around in order to create a row or column of three same-color blocks. This causes the group to clear, and potentially create chains from the blocks above falling. As the game continues, the number of blocks that must be cleared to continue as well as the speed at which the stack rises will both increase.

The game includes three modes. First is training mode which explains the basics of the game. In this mode, a certain number of blocks must be cleared to complete the stage. Second is a “pin-up” mode for one player, where clearing blocks reveals parts of an image of a cute anime girl, the goal being to uncover the entire picture. Last is a two-player versus mode, where players compete to clear their blocks the fastest, and can send garbage blocks to their opponent and fill up their field. The game includes two difficulty settings, two versus modes, a sound test, and a unique mode that displays the entire game in sepia tone.

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Compile, Megapanel is a rare and eccentric puzzle-arcade hybrid developed specifically for the Sega Mega Drive. Capitalizing on the late-80s puzzle craze sparked by games like Tetris, Compile infused their proprietary Puyo Puyo-style charm into a block-sliding format featuring an eclectic cast of anime-inspired, fantasy warriors. While it never received an official Western localization during its initial 16-bit run, Megapanel has since gained a cult following among retro collectors for its unique thematic wrapper—framing a standard sliding-tile puzzle as a strategic RPG confrontation where clearing blocks translates to direct sword and spell attacks against rival adventurers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional falling-block puzzlers, Megapanel tasks players with rearranging a static, scrambled mosaic grid of rectangular and square stone panels. By sliding adjacent panels into empty spaces, players must reform a cohesive, multi-tile character portrait before the timer expires or the opponent overwhelms them. The game features a robust campaign mode where selecting specific heroes changes the dimensions and complexity of your puzzle panels. As you successfully reconstruct portraits, your character executes dramatic visual attacks—from heavy sword strikes to elemental magic blasts—depicted in classic 16-bit sprite animations at the top of the screen. Combo chains and rapid clears trigger counter-attacks that dump junk panels onto your opponent's grid, introducing a frantic tactical layer of speed versus spatial awareness.
