Description

Metal Fangs is a unique futuristic battle driving game, where the player controls a team of racers and must attempt to destroy the competing team. Each “race” is made up of two heats of two parts each, and hits or kills on the other team earns points. During each heat, each team takes one turn attacking (four vehicles on the course) and one turn defending (three vehicles on the course). The team with the most points at the end of the last heat wins a reward and moves on to the next match.

After each successful match there is a game of chance where winnings can be increased. There is also a two-player simultaneous battle mode.

Released exclusively for the Sega Genesis during the late-era lifecycle of the 16-bit console, Metal Fangs is a cult-classic, cyberpunk action-platformer developed by a rogue indie studio that pushed the Motorola 68000 processor to its absolute limits. Set in a dystopian, neon-soaked megalopolis ruled by the tyrannical cyber-syndicate known as "The Iron Syndicate," the storyline follows Blitz—a genetically engineered, cybernetically enhanced wolf warrior equipped with a devastating titanium jaw and military-grade plasma armor. Tasked with dismantling the syndicate's global mainframe and rescuing his captured pack, Blitz must claw his way through eight heavily fortified industrial sectors. While it missed out on a widespread Western release initially, prompting it to become a legendary holy grail among retro cartridge collectors, the game is celebrated for its blistering pacing, heavy metal soundtrack synthesized through the Genesis YM2612 chip, and unflinching difficulty.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Metal Fangs merges the run-and-gun intensity of Contra with the ferocious close-quarters melee combat of Shinobi. Players traverse vertical and horizontal stages filled with automated turrets, acid vats, and rogue mechanized drones. Blitz's primary offensive weapon is his namesake "Metal Fang" bite attack, which deals massive damage to enemies at point-blank range and can deflect incoming projectiles if timed with absolute precision. Complementing his bite, Blitz wields a rapid-fire plasma blaster that can be upgraded by collecting energy cores dropped by downed bosses. The control system introduces a dynamic "Overdrive Meter": sustaining continuous damage-dealing without taking hits charges Blitz's internal reactor, allowing players to unleash a screen-clearing sonic howl. Platforming sections demand absolute mastery of Blitz's wall-kick and double-dash maneuvers, ensuring that every level tests both reflexes and tactical positioning.
