Description

The object of this head-to-head puzzle game is to clear your grid of falling patterns called puyos by forming chains of four or more same-colored puyos in a straight line or one of several geometric patterns. What makes this a challenging two-player contest is the fact that when you clear a chain of puyos from your grid, it drops a random piece of filler onto your opponent’s grid. The more puyos you clear, the more you fill your opponent’s grid, and if you can clutter up his grid enough to fill it to the top, you’ve won the game.

Overview & History

Released by Compile in 1994 and subsequently ported to the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) in 1994, Puyo Puyo 2 (known as *Puyo Puyo Tsuu*) revolutionized the puzzle genre by introducing the brilliant "Offset" mechanic. While the original game was a hit, this sequel perfected competitive puzzle design, becoming an arcade and console phenomenon in Japan and forming the bedrock for competitive puzzle esports. The whimsical storyline follows the mischievous protagonist Arle Nadja and her sidekick Carbuncle as they once again climb Satan’s (Dark Prince) tower, battling a bizarre gauntlet of quirky monsters and wizards—such as the skeleton Sukiyapodes, the musician Skeleton T, and the shape-shifting Harpy—each waiting on successive floors with unique dialogue and escalating AI difficulty.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Puyo Puyo 2 involves arranging pairs of gelatinous, colorful blobs called "Puyos" that fall from the top of the screen. When four or more of the same color connect horizontally or vertically, they pop and vanish. The defining innovation of this sequel is the counter-attack system: when your opponent triggers a chain that would flood your board with transparent "Nuisance Puyos," you can instantly neutralize them by triggering your own chain reactions before the garbage blocks drop. This added immense tactical depth, turning matches into psychological chess matches of building hidden multi-stage chain towers, timing drops, and baiting opponents. Character selection in the versus mode dictates the specific order of rival opponents you face in the Tower mode, though all share the same fundamental puzzle physics, distinguishing themselves solely through personality, music themes, and cutscenes.
