Description

Pyramid Magic is a platform puzzle game that casts the player as a young explorer seeking a treasure hidden deep within a pyramid. Each stage contains blocks, treasure boxes, and an exit which is blocked by a ghost. The explorer can kick and destroy the blocks as well as carry them, and can also move through small openings by carrying blocks into them. However, if he falls even one square downward, the block will crush him and the stage must be restarted. He must collect the contents of each box in order — the last contains an item which will dispel the ghost — and reach the exit without either trapping or crushing himself with the blocks.

After clearing each stage, a time bonus is awarded, and an extra life is earned for every 3000 points. Every five stages, the player receives a password with which to resume play, and is also allowed to skip two stages. There are a total of 35 puzzles to solve.

Developed and published by Salgnik in 1991, *Pyramid Magic* is an obscure and fascinating puzzle-platformer released exclusively for the Sega Genesis in Japan as part of the niche educational and logic-driven software wave of the early '90s. The storyline casts players as an intrepid, turban-wearing archaeologist exploring the treacherous, maze-like chambers of an ancient Egyptian tomb. The ultimate goal is to appease the resting spirits by collecting mystical artifacts while evading deadly traps and roaming desert guardians. Although it never received a Western localization during its initial run, the game has since gained a cult following among retro collectors and cartridge hunters due to its minimalist presentation and brain-teasing stage design.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard action platformers on the Genesis, *Pyramid Magic* focuses heavily on grid-based puzzle-solving rather than combat. The protagonist must navigate single-screen, multi-tiered stages filled with sliding blocks, crumbling floor tiles, and wandering mummies. The core mechanics revolve around pushing heavy sarcophagi and stone pillars to block enemy paths or create bridges over bottomless chasms. Players cannot directly attack enemies; instead, survival depends entirely on spatial awareness and manipulating the environment. Each level features a strict time limit and a set quota of treasures that must be gathered before the exit portal activates, escalating the tension as you carefully plan your moves to avoid getting trapped by your own displaced blocks.
