At first glance, Slap Fight MD is a direct conversion of the 1986 arcade classic Slap Fight from Toaplan and Taito, featuring a faithful conversion of the original title with several difficulty settings, as well as both original and arranged soundtracks. However, also included on the cartridge is a completely new sequel with all-new stages, bosses, graphics, and music. The basic gameplay is identical: a vertically-scrolling shooter where power-ups cycle through a list to choose from, and it is possible to construct massively-wide ships with incredible firepower. Slap Fight MD also adds the ability to jettison your ship’s power-ups causing a massive screen-filling explosion that can potentially save your life.

Originally released in arcades by Taisen Kikaku and Toaplan in 1986, Slap Fight received a legendary 16-bit console overhaul in 1993 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, courtesy of Tengen and MNM Software. Subtitled MD, this port is far more than a simple arcade translation; it stands as a masterclass in vertical shoot-'em-up design. The storyline casts players as the pilot of the SWF-V "Apollon" fighter craft, tasked with traversing the galaxy to overthrow the tyrannical Gilos empire and liberate colonized star systems. Unlike its contemporaries, Slap Fight MD features an upgraded soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro alongside original arcade tunes, making this Genesis version a distinct, highly sought-after collector's item for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At the core of Slap Fight MD is a revolutionary power-up system that predates and rivals Gradius. As you blast enemy formations, they drop stars that fill a tactical upgrade meter at the bottom of the screen. Cycling through this meter lets you instantly claim specific weapon enhancements—ranging from the standard straight-fire laser, wide-spread plasma bursts, and directional homing shots, to massive shields and speed boosts. A defining feature is the "Wing" power-up, which physically attaches two side-modules to your ship, expanding your hitbox and firepower, but can also be detached to execute a devastating smart bomb attack that clears the screen of lesser foes. Players can choose between the classic arcade mode or the exclusive "MD Mode," which introduces completely new stages, branching paths, revamped bosses, and an expanded arsenal.
