Description

Based on the popular television show from 1967, Ultraman directly follows the story of its source material. Cast in the role of the titular Ultraman, the player must defeat many of the same monsters that appeared in the original series. Taking the appearance of a 1-on-1 fighting game, Ultraman can punch, kick, and grapple his opponent, as well as use a variety of various special moves that must be charged. However, in order to actually defeat his opponent, Ultraman must deplete their continually-recharging life bar, and at that moment hit with his most powerful special attack: the Specium Beam. As the game continues, different enemies may even find ways to avoid this most formidable attack, and Ultraman must adapt. Each stage has a time limit of only three minutes, and there are three lives and no continues.

Ultraman

Overview & History

Released by Bandai in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, Ultraman adapts the iconic Japanese tokusatsu franchise into a unique, one-on-one fighting game format. Eschewing traditional side-scrolling action, the title focuses entirely on cinematic, 1-on-1 giant monster duels. The storyline loosely follows the Science Special Search Party as Earth faces an unprecedented onslaught of extraterrestrial kaiju. Unlike standard arcade fighters of the era, the game implements an innovative survival mechanic tied to Ultraman's famous Color Timer. Players must defeat opposing behemoths like Baltan, Gomora, and Red King before the three-minute terrestrial time limit expires, adding immense tension to every brutal, arena-style exchange.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Combat revolves around a strict stamina and energy gauge system rather than simple combo mashing. Ultraman fights from a traditional 2D perspective, executing punches, flying dropkicks, and grappling maneuvers against massive opponents. The core strategic element involves utilizing the 'Spacium Ray' and other signature energy projectiles. However, players cannot simply spam specials; using heavy energy attacks depletes your gauge and shortens the critical Color Timer countdown, which begins flashing red and beeping frantically as defeat approaches. Successfully executing the finishing beam requires timing enemy staggers and creating safe distance, faithfully replicating the dramatic pacing of a classic 1960s television episode.
