Description

The warlord Guardia was banished from the planet Sephiroth, otherwise known to be a very peaceful planet. Many years later, he returns, complete with an entire army which overpowers the Guardian army, leaving one hope: the newly developed XDR craft.

XDR is a horizontal scrolling shooter in the mold of Gradius, featuring upgradable weapons and six stages of shooting action. The game features a vague science fiction theme, and includes six stages with a boss at the end of each. There are three difficulty settings.

XDR: X-Dazedly-Ray

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Tamtex for the Sega Genesis, XDR: X-Dazedly-Ray is a wonderfully eccentric and brutally challenging sci-fi horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up. While overshadowed by heavy-hitters like Technosoft's Thunder Force series, this hidden cult classic carved out its own distinct identity through a bizarre, neon-soaked aesthetic and an eclectic, synth-heavy soundtrack. The storyline thrusts players into the cockpit of the advanced XDR starfighter, tasked with single-handedly breaching the heavily fortified homeworld of an invasive alien armada known as the Dazedly Empire. Despite its striking visual design and frantic arcade action, the game never saw a Western release, keeping its status as a coveted, obscure collectible among retro Sega enthusiasts for decades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

XDR distinguishes itself from contemporary shmup contemporaries through a robust modular power-up system. As players navigate six wildly varying stages—ranging from organic bio-caverns to crystalline space fortresses—destroying specific enemy formations yields crystal shards. Collecting these upgrades your ship's firepower, cycling through a versatile arsenal that includes piercing laser beams, wide-spread plasma bursts, and rear-guard defensive pods. A standout mechanic is the dynamic speed adjustment toggle, allowing pilots to instantly cycle through multiple velocity tiers on the fly, a crucial tactical feature required to simultaneously dodge chaotic bullet hell patterns and maneuver through tight, shifting environment hazards.
