Description

Double Clutch is an overhead racing game similar to Super Off Road. One or two players choose from four different drivers, each with their own special ability, then head out for a race on one of four different tracks. Of course, the goal is to be the first to finish three laps of the course, but watch out for your opponents; bump into them or the terrain and your vehicle will take damage. Take too much damage and it’s game over! After each race, winnings can be used to upgrade or repair the vehicle. There are three difficulty levels, which affect how quickly the vehicle takes damage. There is also a practice mode where the player can freely choose any track.

Double Clutch

Overview & History

Developed by System 3 and released for the Sega Genesis in 1993, Double Clutch is an eccentric and fast-paced futuristic vehicular combat and racing hybrid. Originally slated to make waves as an isometric arcade-style thrill ride, the Genesis port faced a tumultuous development cycle before finally hitting shelves in North America and Europe. While it didn't achieve the mainstream blockbuster status of Rock 'N Roll Racing, it carved out a dedicated cult following due to its unique visual presentation, thumping synthesized soundtrack, and uncompromising difficulty. Players are thrust into high-speed, post-apocalyptic motorsport leagues where surviving the track is just as important as crossing the finish line first, blending traditional driving physics with aggressive vehicular weaponry.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Double Clutch distinguishes itself from standard racers by abandoning traditional side-scrolling or rear-view perspectives in favor of a distinct pseudo-3D isometric viewpoint. Players pilot heavily armored, customizable combat buggies across hazardous, obstacle-laden circuits set on alien worlds and dystopian urban environments. The core gameplay loop revolves around managing your vehicle's velocity while simultaneously engaging rival racers using an arsenal of offensive and defensive gadgets. You must expertly navigate treacherous terrain, sharp hairpins, and moving environmental hazards while collecting power-ups scattered across the tarmac. Ramming opponents, laying down oil slicks, and unleashing front-mounted cannons are vital tactics for securing pole position. Vehicle management is critical; sustaining too much structural damage without finding a repair icon results in a fiery explosion and a costly respawn delay.
