Worms

Overview & History

Released in 1996 by Team17 and ported to the Sega Genesis during the twilight of the 16-bit era, Worms is a legendary turn-based artillery tactical game. While the franchise eventually found massive success in 3D, this Genesis iteration distills the anarchic, multiplayer-focused warfare down to its brilliant 2D pixel-art roots. Though graphically constrained compared to its CD-ROM contemporaries, the Genesis version retains the quirky British humor, hand-drawn destructible landscapes, and high-stakes physics engine that defined a generation of couch multiplayer gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players command a squad of four pink, perpetually squawking annelids across randomly generated, fully destructible terrain floating above the ocean. Matches are strictly turn-based, forcing players to strategize within a tight countdown timer. The game features an iconic arsenal ranging from standard bazookas and cluster bombs to bizarre novelties like the Super Sheep, Holy Hand Grenades, and Donkeys. Because wind direction heavily influences projectile trajectories, mastering ballistics is essential. As the match progresses, sudden death mode raises the sea level, forcing all surviving worms onto ever-shrinking patches of land where a single well-placed push or explosion spells instant watery doom.
