Description

Tom Clown is an unlicensed game for the Sega Mega Drive developed by AV artisan and published by Realtec in 1993.

The game is a re-imagining of the Atari 2600 game Circus – move the teeterboard back and forth to bounce the clowns upwards and pop balloons. Power-ups will pass by overhead and give the player extra chances or clear certain colored balloons. After clearing the stage, the player moves onto the next round.

Tom Clown

Overview & History

Released during the twilight era of the 16-bit generation, Tom Clown is a delightfully bizarre platformer developed for the Sega Genesis. Originally conceived by an obscure Eastern European studio, the game tells the surreal tale of Tom, a circus entertainer who must traverse a shifting, gravity-defying funhouse to rescue his kidnapped troupe from the nefarious Ringmaster Malice. Due to its late-cycle release and unconventional aesthetic, the title saw a very limited physical run, making it a sought-after collector's item today. The game blends high-difficulty platforming with whimsical circus-themed set pieces, creating an experience that is as frustrating as it is uniquely charming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tom’s primary method of interaction and combat revolves around his circus training. Players must navigate multi-tiered stages using acrobatic maneuvers like bouncing on springboards, swinging from trapezes, and tightrope walking across bottomless chasms. Tom’s main offensive move is hurling explosive confetti bombs and spinning his juggling pins to defeat enemies such as mechanical monkeys and rogue unicyclists. The game features five distinct worlds—ranging from the Hall of Mirrors to the Burning Big Top—each introducing hazardous environmental obstacles like collapsing platforms and shifting gravity fields. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels grant temporary abilities, such as the balloon-animal glider and the pie-throwing rapid-fire mode, adding strategic depth to the chaotic action.
